Hello Friends! I thought I'd introduce the blog by showing you some of my latest paintings! These are studio pieces at Fountainside Gallery in Wilmington, NC. "The Launch" top left, shows a group of men readying their sail boat for a long trip; the pyramid design of the composition (stability in design terms) juxtaposed with the straining men gave the painting a lot of tension, which I loved! Sunlit colors with little deep shading are what we see here on the coast. In contrast, "Evening Sailing" on the right is late in the evening, near dusk, with the ship and sailors rim lit by the fading sun. Same subjects, different light...and light is what it's all about!
The poppy piece, while also somewhat rim lit, is earlier in the day and the composition is way different, with the center of interest thrown up near the top of the painting. Just for answers that may be asked:
The Launch is 24x30, oil on canvas
Evening Sail is 30x24, oil on canvas
A Carpet of Red, poppy painting is 22x28, oil on canvas
I also do a lot of work in pastel and we'll get into that in a while! the "Coastal Pines" image is a pastel, 29x33, on sanded paper.
